Hire and reward insurance, explained

If you are paid to carry other people’s goods, standard van insurance will not cover you. Here is what you need and how to get it.

What is hire and reward insurance?

Hire and reward (H&R) cover insures you to carry goods that belong to someone else in return for payment. Delivering parcels for Amazon Flex, Evri, DPD or Yodel, food deliveries and man-and-van work all count. A normal "social, domestic and pleasure" or even "business use" policy excludes it.

Why it matters

Drive uninsured for the work you are doing and you risk a claim being refused, six penalty points, a fine and the van being seized. Delivery networks also check your certificate before you can take routes.

What does it cover?

  • Third-party liability while working.
  • Damage to the van if you choose comprehensive cover.
  • Goods in transit is usually a separate add-on that covers the parcels themselves.

What does it cost?

Own policies for new couriers typically range from £2,000 to £4,000 a year, paid monthly with a deposit. Age, licence history, postcode and van size all move the price. Excesses of £500 to £1,000 are common.

The easier route: included with the van

Our Premium plan includes hire-and-reward fleet insurance in the weekly price, subject to eligibility (usually 23+, two years on the licence, six points or fewer). No deposit, no annual contract and the policy is already matched to the van you drive. Compare it against your own quote on the plans page.

Getting covered on the Standard plan

  1. Get a quote from a specialist courier broker with the van’s registration.
  2. Choose the cover level and any goods-in-transit add-on your network requires.
  3. Upload the certificate in your GoVantage dashboard before collection.
  4. Set a reminder — renewals lapse quietly and we cannot release a van without a live certificate.

Frequently asked

Can I add a second driver? Yes on most policies, and on our fleet cover if they pass eligibility. Does courier insurance cover personal use? Usually yes — check the certificate. Do I need it for a one-off job? If you are paid, yes.
